Dating your Lantern   (Stove)

Dating a Coleman® lantern is very easy, 95% of the time. Most made after the mid-1920s have a manufacturing date stamped on them, usually on the bottom or the bottom edge of the fount (tank).

To date your lantern, first make sure the fuel cap is down tight and then turn the lantern upside-down and look at the bottom of the fount.

Figure 1
Bottom of Model 200A lantern, October 1966

The most common location and method of date stamping, used since the late 1940s, is just off-center on the very bottom of the fount. You will see two sets of numbers, one set left and one set right of center.

The number, or numbers, on the left indicate the month while the numbers on the right are the last two digits of the year. The Model 200A lantern in Figure 1 was made in October (10th month) of 1966. The "200A" you see in the photo is part of the Coleman® logo that is stamped center on the fount.

Excessive paint or rust may make the numbers hard to read but if you scratch the area lightly with a sharp instrument you should be able to read the numbers.

We do have one exception: towards the end of the 1940s, Coleman® used a letter rather than a number or numbers to identify the month. A lantern from January of 1948 could be stamped A 48. And, the period identified by the letter seems to be longer than a month. Some believe this is a "quarter-year" stamp (A=1st quarter, Jan-Feb-Mar) while others believe the letter indicates a half-year. Never having seen a Coleman® lantern or stove with a "C" or "D" on it, I believe the A stamp means January-June and the B means July-December.

Now lanterns made prior to 1947 or so have a similar method of stamping, but the number stamps are reversed.

Figure 2

The number on the left side of these older models indicates the year. Accordingly, the Model 242C shown in Figure 2 was manufactured in 1947 during the 4th month.

Figure 3

Figure 3 shows an older 220 lantern that was made in September of 1928.

It is possible to not know which decade a year indicator refers to. A 242A lantern from 1935 could be marked identical to a 1945 242C. On occassion you will have to identify which lantern model you have in order to understand the year mark.

Dating your Stove

Coleman® started dating their stoves in the 1940s with the Military Specification (milspec) line. Commercial stove dating start in the early 1960s.

Lanterns usually have a date stamp on the bottom or the bottom edge of the fount (tank). For a stove you can often find a date imprinted on the bottom of the case, and/or on the underside of the tabs used to latch the fuel tank onto the case.
